FAO Provides Technical Assistance to the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources in Sudan

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources in Sudan signed a project document, “Recovering from Conflict: Integrated Support for Most Vulnerable Communities in South Kordofan”  on March 12, 2020 at the premises of the ministry. The project came upon the request of the Republic of the Sudan, represented by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, seeking the technical assistance from FAO.

In his opening remarks during the signing ceremony, FAO Representative to Sudan, Dr Babagana Ahmadu, underlined the importance of this project, especially for the women farmers of Abu Kershola and Dallami localities of South Kordofan State of Sudan. He added that the project would play a big role in promoting peace, capacity building, training farmers to become more resilience to climate change and raising the awareness of pastorals.

H.E Mr Eissa Osman Sharief the Federal Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources, stressed the importance of supporting the great role women play in South Kordofan State in agriculture. He added that the project would play an effective part in supporting peace, human rights, food security and increase the income of the families in the area.   

Sudan’s South Kordofan state has been the center of armed conflict between the Government of Sudan and opposition groups in the past decades. The project aimed to address insecurities of vulnerable communities of Abu Kershola and Dallami localities of South Kordofan State of Sudan. People of those areas were most severely affected by the conflicts, mass displacement and large numbers of returnees.

A number of the United Nations organizations and UN partners will implement the project, which will end by December 31, 2022. Budget estimation is 5,099,529.78 USD.
