"I want to highlight the stories of hope from around the world,"
jazz singer Dee Dee Bridgewater said as she explained to an audience
in Senegal in 1999 why she had agreed to become one of the first
FAO Ambassadors. Since then, Ms Bridgewater has become an influential
advocate for the world’s poor and undernourished and an outspoken
supporter of assistance to developing countries.
As an FAO Ambassador, Ms Bridgewater visited projects operating
under the Special Programme for Food Security in Senegal in December
1999 and since then has acted as an active and committed FAO's advocate
during various television programmes broadcast by Radio France Internationale,
Fox Morning News in New York etc.
In October 2002, on the occasion of the World Food Day celebrations
in New York, a greeting message by Dee Dee Bridgewater was projected
for the audience in the Dag Hammarskjold Auditorium of the United
Nations Building.
Dee Dee is planning to visit FAO development projects
in Brazil to give visibility to the World Food Summit
follow-up in the country and to establish its relationship with
the "Zero Hunger Project", which is a priority of the
newly elected President.
