"Join hands with FAO in its fight against hunger, said Brazilian
singer Gilberto Gil upon accepting his nomination as FAO Ambassador
on 16 October 2001. "It is not a question of the survival of the
fittest. It is a question of survival. Full stop. We need your support,"
he said.
Mr Gil is a singer, composer and instrumentalist whose music combines
bossa nova, samba and funk as well as reggae and other Caribbean
rhythms. Mr Gil, who has released more than 30 albums during his
30-year career, has devoted considerable time to social and humanitarian
activities in recent years. Even before his appointment as a FAO
Ambassador, he had recorded numerous testimonials in support of
FAO’s campaign to eradicate hunger in the world.
All over 2002, Gilberto Gil has participated in numerous seminars
and round tables in Brazil dedicated to the fight against hunger,
and is acting as an active promoter of the "Zero Hunger Project"
in his home country.
