Agriculture and nutrient-rich crops are the bedrock of food and nutrition security in Africa

Malnutrition, especially lack of essential minerals and vitamins pose major challenges in African countries. Africa has the highest prevalence of undernourishment in the world, afflicting almost every one in four people. A recent article for Nigerian newspaper Leadership espouses the use of bio-fortified crops for improved nutrition, and investing in agriculture for economic gain. The author also advocates for improved school feeding programmes focusing on nutrient-rich crops, grown by farmers within their localities, which have the dual benefit of opening up huge institutional markets for farmers while feeding children with healthy school meals.
