Undernutrition and stunting linked to poor sanitation

A study recently conducted in two Indian slums, one structured and one unstructured, revealed a correlation between children’s nutrition status and environmental conditions. Public services like proper housing, clean water and waste and sanitation infrastructure, which are not provided in unstructured slums, can lead to poor nutrition. The results of the research showed that 70 percent of children in the unstructured slum were underweight, as opposed to 40.67 percent in the structured slum. The report recommends a holistic solution to tackling the problem, including education, health and sanitation facilities in addition to food and supplementary nutrition.
