Ley Modelo de Promoción de la Agroecología

The FAO has presented an ambitious project to promote agroecology through a "Model Law" for Latin America and the Caribbean. Developed in collaboration with the PARLATINO (Latin American and Caribbean Parliament) and supported by organizations like the Spanish Cooperation Agency and AMEXCID, this model law aims to transform agricultural practices across the region.

Agroecology, as defined in the proposal, is not just a set of agricultural practices but a comprehensive approach combining science, social movements, and practical applications. It emphasizes biodiversity, ecological balance, and social inclusion, addressing critical challenges such as climate change, food security, and the empowerment of marginalized groups, including women, youth, and Indigenous communities.

The model law outlines a robust framework with ten chapters, covering everything from institutional structures and education to financing mechanisms and international cooperation. It aims to create a supportive environment for agroecological practices, encouraging innovation, sustainability, and community participation. The law also highlights the need for responsible governance, equitable resource distribution, and alignment with global sustainability goals, such as the SDGs.
