The role of agroecology and regenerative agriculture in farming and food systems in Africa

The Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health Summit, held in Nairobi in May 2024, brought together leaders, researchers, farmers, and stakeholders to discuss the future of farming in Africa. A side event hosted by DeSIRA-LIFT and IFAD highlighted the transformative potential of agroecology and regenerative agriculture in addressing soil health, productivity, and inclusivity.

At the heart of these discussions was the need to transition from input-heavy farming to ecological intensification, a process-focused approach that enhances natural cycles, reduces dependency on external inputs, and empowers farmers with greater autonomy. Speakers stressed the importance of integrating local knowledge, participatory research, and innovative policies to create farming systems that are resilient, equitable, and sustainable.

Key recommendations included supporting smallholder farmers, fostering innovation in organic and biofertilizers, and developing governance frameworks that enable systemic change. Examples like community-led restoration initiatives and intercropping practices showcased how these approaches not only improve yields but also transform livelihoods and foster environmental stewardship.

This dialogue underscores agroecology's role as a cornerstone for Africa’s agricultural transformation. Dive deeper into the report to explore the strategies and stories shaping a new era of farming across the continent.
