From the territories to the state: Policymaking for agroecology in Colombia

In Colombia, agroecology is emerging as a powerful approach for fostering sustainable food systems and strengthening territorial governance. Over the past two years, grassroots organizations, including peasant, Indigenous, and Afro-descendant communities, have united to advocate for a National Agroecology Plan. Through regional dialogues and community consultations, these groups have co-created a proposal that integrates agroecological principles into national policymaking, aiming to address systemic issues such as land inequality and environmental degradation.

The shift towards agroecology aligns with the current government’s focus on social, economic, and environmental justice. Led by President Gustavo Petro and Vice President Francia Márquez, this administration has prioritized food sovereignty, equitable resource management, and peacebuilding in its national development agenda. Regional agroecology meetings have played a crucial role in shaping policy proposals, highlighting local socio-environmental challenges, and fostering collaboration between community actors and government representatives. Key outcomes include strengthened advocacy platforms and a framework for integrating local food systems into national strategies.

Initiatives like "Ecobúfalo Campesino" in the Cimitarra River Peasant Reserve Zone exemplify how agroecology can drive rural resilience and economic autonomy. This cooperative has empowered over 60 farming families by promoting buffalo farming as a sustainable alternative in conflict-affected areas. The project has improved community livelihoods by enhancing food security, diversifying incomes, and fostering collective well-being. Such examples underscore agroecology’s potential to support peacebuilding and socio-economic transformation, while also revealing the need for sustained public investment and policy coherence to scale these efforts nationally.
