A Methodological Framework for Assessing the Agroecological Performance of Farms in Portugal: Integrating TAPE and ACT Approaches

Agroecology, with its holistic integration of science, social movements, and farming practices, is pivotal for sustainable food systems. However, defining and measuring agroecological performance remains a challenge. This study presents a methodology adapted to family farms in Portugal, designed to assess their agroecological performance and support public policies that foster sustainable transitions. The methodology draws from the FAO's TAPE framework and Gliessman’s five levels of food system change, integrating key indicators into a tailored assessment model.

Fieldwork involving family farmers highlighted the importance of territorial adaptability, the need to address local constraints, and the value of non-technical language in facilitating participation. Results showed that knowledge exchange and circular economy principles were strong points, while synergies and recycling practices needed reinforcement. This evaluation framework provides critical insights into the agroecological transition, offering a foundation for co-created public policies that enhance the resilience and sustainability of family farming systems in Portugal.
