When maize screams, beans listen: How the Three Sisters crop trio repels pests

For centuries, small farmers in Mexico and Central America have relied on an ancient agricultural practice called "milpa," which traces back to the Maya civilization. This system, known as the Three Sisters, involves planting maize, beans, and squash together. Scientists have long understood the synergy: beans enrich the soil with nitrogen, maize offers support for the beans, and squash helps control weeds and retain moisture. However, new research reveals an additional benefit—reduced pest damage. Recent findings presented at the Ecological Society of America suggest these plants "communicate," with maize signaling beans to lure insects that feed on pests.
