The Union of Tattaguine Communities in Senegal

The mission of the Union of Tattaguine Communities is to strengthen food self-sufficiency through the capacity building of local communities in the sustainable governance of their natural resources and family farms. The initiative started in 2011. Activities have been developed to strengthen the resilience of youth in the community to climate change and land degradation through:

- Environmental education: since 2014, environmental education programs in two elementary schools have been reinforced by relevant structures. Environmental education has been successful, children are sensitized and participate in the transmission of knowledge in their families.

- Re-greening of agro-ecosystems: 658 ha are now managed in Assisted Natural Regeneration (ANR), spread over 18 villages. After 3 years of soil protection, the effects of ANR are already visible, such as the return of fertile species and an increase in the number and density of species in the fields.

- Local management of natural resources: in 2015, a convention for sustainable management of natural resources was set up, mobilizing 27 villages in the two communes.

- Diversification of agroecological production activities: 530 producers have been supported since 2017 to train in agroecology and plant 4,000 fruit trees and 1,500 fertilizer trees.

This sheet is produced within the framework of the Avaclim project, which aims to create the necessary conditions for the deployment of agroecology in drylands. The international solidarity association CARI coordinates the Avaclim project while Environnement Développement Action pour la Protection Naturelle des Terroirs (ENDA Pronat) is in charge of its implementation in Senegal.
