Tifawine Cooperative in Morocco
The initiative is located in the valley of Asni, at the foot of the High Atlas Mountains. In 2010, the family farms of the Tifawine cooperative decided to change their practices to improve the value of their orchards. Since this transition to agroecology, yields have increased by 27% and so has the quality of the fruit (59% first choice fruit).
At the technical level, they have gradually adopted the principles of agroecology for orchard management: fertility management based on organic inputs, responsible use of water resources, technical itineraries that meet the needs of the plants while respecting natural resources (e.g. pruning according to the age of the trees, natural control methods), etc.
In terms of farm management, the families have adopted a management tool: the expenditure and income recording book, which facilitates choices for the next season. The initiative has enabled the family farms to move from a situation of precariousness to one of autonomy and to benefit from a fair remuneration thanks to the direct marketing circuit to the "Club Med" holiday villages.
The mission of the initiative is to promote sustainable agricultural development through agroecology approaches and the professionalization of small family fruit production enterprises, grouped within the Tifawine cooperative.
This sheet is produced within the framework of the Avaclim project, which aims to create the necessary conditions for the deployment of agroecology in drylands. The international solidarity association CARI coordinates the Avaclim project while Agrisud International is in charge of its implementation in Morocco.
