Why it is so important to keep our soils healthy

Soils in good condition are indeed the first condition for food production and quality of life: they provide nutrients and shelter the organisms through which food grows - also limiting diseases and pests - they contribute to the regulation of the quality of water that society consumes, of the local and global climate that we endure - in particular by storing 2 to 3 times more carbon than the atmosphere.

As far as agriculture is concerned, increasing the organic matter content is a major lever for improving soil health. Although this content varies according to many factors, and in particular the climate, several virtuous practices contribute to preserving it: the presence of permanent or temporary grasslands, the return to the soil of part of the crop residues, the reduction of periods of bare soil by the introduction of plant cover, the contribution of organic residual products such as compost or animal manure, and the development of anti-erosion measures such as hedges and agroforestry.
