Saint Vincent and the Grenadines will soon have its very first National School Feeding Policy (NFSP) thanks to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Government of Mexico and the Government of Saint Vincent and The Grenadines.

El nuevo informe Financiamiento para la seguridad alimentaria y la nutrición en América Latina y el Caribe, realizado en conjunto por la Organización de Naciones Unidas para la Alimentación y la Agricultura (FAO), la Comisión Económica para América Latina y el Caribe (CEPAL), el Programa Mundial de Alimentos (WFP, por sus siglas en inglés) y el Instituto Interamericano de Cooperación para la Agricultura (IICA), advierte que los costos de no combatir el hambre y la malnutrición pueden llegar a ser más altos que los de las soluciones para garantizar la seguridad alimentaria y una mejor nutrición. 

La iniciativa, apoyada por la FAO y las cooperaciones de España, México y la Unión Europea; es impulsada por más de cien representantes de gobiernos, parlamentos y la academia con la lucha contra el hambre y la malnutrición.

En el informe, las organizaciones advierten que el gasto de no hacerse cargo de esta problemática puede llegar a ser casi seis veces mayor al costo de trabajar para mejorar el acceso a dietas saludables en América Latina y el Caribe. 

El Subdirector General y Representante Regional de FAO, Mario Lubetkin, participó del evento “Revisión del Progreso en la Transformación de los Sistemas Alimentarios”, organizado por Naciones Unidas, donde se evaluó el avance de los países en el cumplimiento de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible. 

Ambas Organizaciones suscribieron una carta de intención para fortalecer y profundizar su colaboración para impulsar la modernización del sector agrícola y rural, el desarrollo de la agricultura a pequeña escala y la seguridad alimentaria en la región.
