Virtual workshop on aquaculture transformation in Asia and the Pacific Region
At the current rate of growth, the planet will have to feed an additional 2 billion people by 2050, requiring an increase in food production by 60–70 percent from current levels. Fish and other aquatic animals and plants are a key part of our future food and nutrition supply and, yet many challenges will need to be overcome to grow and sustain aquatic food systems.
‘Blue Transformation’ is a vision for FAO’s work on aquatic food systems for the future of fish and other aquatic foods to achieve the objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the FAO aspiration of leaving no one behind through sustainable, inclusive, and resilient food systems for better production, better nutrition, better environment, and a better life.
FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (FAORAP) in collaboration with the Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia-Pacific (NACA) organize this workshop on Aquaculture transformation in Asia and the Pacific region to facilitate a technical discussion on aquaculture transformation strategies, priority areas, and innovations that would support sustainable intensification and expansion of aquaculture in the region through innovation and investment. A series of country reports, regional synthesis, investment paper and a draft White Paper on Aquaculture transformation: innovations and investment for sustainable intensification and expansion of aquaculture in Asia and the Pacific region have also been prepared to guide workshop deliberations.
Objectives
This workshop will serve as a pre-consultation in preparation for a high-level meeting on Aquaculture transformation: innovations and investment for sustainable intensification and expansion of aquaculture in Asia and the Pacific region scheduled in November 2022.
Specific objectives of this workshop are to:
• Share key findings of the background papers prepared for the high-level meeting and get feedback from participants particularly on priorities for aquaculture transformation in the region.
• Validate the draft white paper on Aquaculture transformation: innovations and investment for sustainable intensification and expansion of aquaculture in Asia and the Pacific region developed for the high-level meeting.
• Identify follow up and collaborative actions to put aquaculture transformation into policy and practice for the region.
This is virtual zoom meeting. Participants can join the meeting via the online link provided by NACA.
