Forests for food security and nutrition

Lead agencies: FAO and CIFOR-ICRAF
Timeframe: 2024–2027
Contribution to the GFGs: 2, 5 and 6

This initiative aims to update and expand current data on the connections between forests, food security, and nutrition, while also gathering context-specific evidence through case studies at regional, sub-regional, country, and community levels. The goal is to identify challenges and opportunities for developing cross-sectoral policies and programs that strengthen the links between forestry, agriculture, food security, and nutrition.

A key objective of the initiative is to establish a joint roadmap for scaling up actions and implementation, focusing on enhancing the role of forests in food security and nutrition, particularly at the country level, through a global dialogue. The outcomes of the initiative will highlight the necessary actions needed, especially at the national level, to achieve sustainable forestry practices and food security concurrently.

The initiative directly supports Global Forest Goals (GFG) 2, 5, and 6. It contributes to GFG 2 by identifying challenges and opportunities for enhancing the role of forests in food security, such as increasing access to food and improving livelihoods, based on updated data and information. It also supports GFG 5 and 6, aligning with the United Nations Forest Instrument (UNFI). The expected report will provide updated data, highlight best practices, and outline challenges and opportunities in implementing effective cross-sectoral policies and programs related to forestry, agriculture, food security, and nutrition.

The key activities under this joint initiative are:

  • Producing a “Global Report on the Contribution of Forests to Food Security and Nutrition” containing updates of the current data and information on the links between forests and food security and nutrition, case studies on the role of wild-harvested forest foods including wildmeat; and policy opportunities that enhance the contribution of forests to food security and nutrition.
  • Convening the Second International Conference on Forests for Food Security and Nutrition.
