This initiative aims to update available data and information on the links between forests, food security, and nutrition by gathering contextual evidence from case studies at regional, subregional, national, and community levels. It seeks to identify the challenges and opportunities related to developing strong cross-sectoral policies and programmes that strengthen connections between forestry, agriculture, food security, and nutrition. The initiative will also disseminate updated data and information, good practices, and lessons learned through a global dialogue and will establish a joint roadmap to scale up actions and implementation—particularly at the national level—to enhance the contribution of forests to food security and nutrition.
In 2026, the Global Report on the Contribution of Forests to Food Security and Nutrition will be produced and published. It will include an update of existing data and information on the links between forests, food security, and nutrition, as well as an analysis of the challenges and opportunities related to the development of appropriate policies and programmes, and a compilation of lessons learned and good practices. The main findings of the report will be disseminated, and follow-up actions based on its recommendations will be promoted.
In addition, preparations will be undertaken for the organization of a global dialogue — namely, the Second International Conference on Forests, Food Security and Nutrition — during which a joint roadmap for scaling up actions will be developed (subject to resource mobilization). This Second International Conference on Forests, Food Security and Nutrition will be held in 2027.
The expected results include increased awareness of the contribution of forests to food security and nutrition at the global level, as well as momentum generated at global, regional, and national levels, with resources mobilized in countries to strengthen the links between forests, food security, and nutrition, through the promotion of key recommendations from the Report. The expected impact is a contribution to the achievement of SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and an improvement in food security and nutrition.
