旱地的特征在于水资源匮乏。缺水的影响波及到各种自然和人工生态系统，制约了畜牧业生产以及农作物、木材、牧草和其它植物生长，从而影响到生态系统的环境服务功能。旱地的出现是数千年以来多种因素共同影响的结果，诸如降水量少、干旱和热浪以及各种人类活动，如火的利用、放牧、木材和非木材林产品的采集和土壤耕作等。旱地土壤往往容易受到风和水的侵蚀，因密集的矿物风化和土壤表层有机物含量低而表现为相对贫瘠。[...]
