Dans le monde, 222 millions de personnes sont confrontées à des niveaux élevés d’insécurité alimentaire aiguë. Parmi elles, près d’une sur cinq a du mal à trouver suffisamment de nourriture pour survivre au quotidien. Il s’agit essentiellement d’agriculteurs, de pêcheurs, de bergers et d’exploitants forestiers dont les moyens de survie les plus élémentaires ont été détruits par un conflit ou un phénomène météorologique extrême (sécheresse, crue), des organismes nuisibles, des maladies ou encore l’apparition de perturbations économiques et d’une situation d’instabilité.
L’aide à l’agriculture est une forme d’assistance humanitaire vitale. Les interventions rapides et urgentes dans le domaine de l’agriculture, notamment lorsqu’elles sont conjuguées à des aides en espèces et à de l’aide alimentaire, jouent un rôle déterminant sur les disponibilités alimentaires, la nutrition et les déplacements de populations, entre autres, et réduisent ainsi sensiblement les coûts d’autres formes d’aide humanitaire. Plus important encore, ces interventions visent à répondre aux besoins et aux priorités des personnes touchées et donnent à celles-ci les moyens de rester chez elles lorsque la situation le permet, de prendre en charge leurs propres besoins et de se remettre elles-mêmes d’aplomb.
Au titre des appels humanitaires de 2023, la FAO a besoin de 1,9 milliard d’USD pour aider près de 50 millions de personnes à avoir accès à un approvisionnement constant en aliments riches au plan nutritionnel, les aider à se relever et créer un socle de résilience en prévision de futures crises.
