Study case: Caritupe, Municipality of Petit, State of Falcón–Venezuela

The design of a rural sustainable development program by a multi-disciplinary team from the Division of Forestry, Geographical, Farming-Animal and Environmental Services and Projects (UFORGA), attached to the Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Science of the University of Los Andes, is presented in this essay. The program was created with the aim of improving the living conditions of the people of Caritupe, a community located in the watershed of San Pedro, Sierra San Luis, Municipality of Petit, State of Falcón, Venezuela, and encouraging the preservation of natural resources. The methodology involved the principles of research-action-participation adopted by the research group in other rural areas of the country though adjusted to the specific situation of the area under study. The objective of the program is to attain an actual rural sustainable development by promoting the strengthening of the already established organization of the community and its effective participation therein through the cultivation of organic coffee in the shade, the application of reforestation methods to control the erosion and increase the issuing potential of the watershed, and the use of constructive and energy-related technologies for the establishment of a cultivation center of organic coffee and the construction rural housing.
