Wheat cultivation with levelling and Integrated Pest Management (IPM)

This practice briefly describes the introduction of levelling and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices for wheat production in the Kashmore district of Sindh Province in Pakistan. It provides a cost-benefit analysis of this improved practice compared to the traditional way of producing wheat in the district. The main hazards affecting wheat cultivation in the Kashmore district are dry spells and related water scarcity. Decisions about the use of inputs, such as fertilizers and agrochemicals, were taken following participatory decision-making techniques and by adopting Agro-Ecosystem Analysis based IPM. This allowed farmers to make a judicial use of inputs and promote uniform crop plant growth without compromising yield. The improved practice was demonstrated in a Farmer Field School (FFS). The monitored period was during the Rabi season 2017-2018 (from November 2017 to April 2018).
