Interventions against intestinal Nematodes: nutritional and chemotherapeutic solutions

Nematode worms are significant health problems for sheep and goats throughout the world. The impact is seen in a number of ways. Parasitism causes a reduction in food intake and lower weight gains. Milk production can also be affected, and heavily parasitised animals may die. The economic consequences for livestock keepers can therefore be serious. This technology provides an improved understanding of the relative benefits of nutritional and/or chemotherapeutic intervention against gastro-intestinal parasitism by Haemonchus contortus to assist farmers to optimise goat production. Information is provided on use of the FAMACHA© system for strategic treatment, and the use of Urea-Molasses Blocks (UMB) for supplementary feeding.
