CCASIA is promoting the use of Codex standards across the region

In Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Japan, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, the Republic of Korea, Singapore and Thailand this year, activities were organized to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Codex, in conjunction with the 5th World Food Safety Day, with the theme “Food standards save lives”. In addition, CCASIA Members actively participated in the webinars held by the FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific and WHO Regional Offices of the World Health Organization for South-East Asia and the Western Pacific, to promote the understanding and use of Codex standards in the region.

“Our work will not leave anyone out in the region. All Members should be heard,” said Dr Jing Tian, Coordinator for ASIA, “The Member Countries have always been very supportive, in spite of the different scenarios of economy, culture, structure of national Codex framework, etc. Codex standards and guidelines helped the Members to improve their national food control to ensure food security and food safety in the region, and to promote food trade regionally and globally.”

A CCASIA Codex Colloquium is scheduled for15–16 November 2023 in Xiamen, Fujian Province, China to celebrate Codex@60, by highlighting achievements, brainstorming for the future, and, more importantly, to discuss the issues of core interest for CCASIA Members. It will be the first time CCASIA Members physically sit together for Codex sincethe COVID-19 pandemic.

With twogeneral subject committees, CCFA and CCPR, two commodity committees, the Codex Committee on Fats and Oils (CCFO), the Codex Committee on Spices and Culinary Herbs(CCSCH), and the Ad hoc Codex Intergovernmental Task Force on Antimicrobial Resistance (TFAMR) hosted by the China, Malaysia, India and the Republic of Korea respectively, and several Codex committee meetings co-hosted by CCASIA countries, and by leading or participating in work on elaborating Codex standards, Members in the region are happy to work with friends all around the world to tackle food safety problems, and to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations.

As DrYongxiang Fan, Chairperson of CCFA said: “We are so pleased to see the achievement of Codex during the past 60 years, still and always, we look forward and will get us ready for the next decade. Happy birthday Codex!”
