Pathways for the Future of Sustainable Food Systems in the Mediterranean

23/04/2021

FAO, CIHEAM, UfM, One Planet SFS Programme and PRIMA join forces to contribute to the UN Food Systems Summit and to advance food systems transformation in the Mediterranean

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will jointly convene two Independent Food Systems Summit Dialogues on “Pathways for the Future of Sustainable Food Systems in the Mediterranean, alongside the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM), the Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfMS), the One Planet Network’s Sustainable Food Systems Programme (OPN-SFSP) and the Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area (PRIMA) Foundation.

The first of these two Dialogues will take place virtually on 27 April 2021 from 14:00 to 17:30.

Both gatherings are organised within the framework of the UN Food Systems Summit and will aim at fostering a broader common understanding of the complex environment of Sustainable Food Systems (SFS) for coping with the growing and interdependent challenges facing the Mediterranean region.

Convened as a multi-stakeholder and multi-disciplinary forum for scientific, technical and policy dialogue, the two events are expected to highlight collaborative and science-based pathways leading to the transformation of food systems in the Mediterranean towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), directly contributing to the Food Systems Summit’s vision and objectives.

These Dialogues will also contribute to setting the stage for the inception of the multi-stakeholder initiative (“SFS-MED Platform”) currently under co-development by CIHEAM, FAO and UfMS as an affiliated project of the OPN-SFSP.

In the first Dialogue participants will jointly identify concrete and cross-cutting actions to face Mediterranean-specific challenges and make food systems in the Mediterranean more sustainable.

Further information is available on the dedicated webpage on the Summit Dialogue Gateway, and in the concept note prepared for the events. The Agenda of the first dialogue is available here.

The plenary sessions will be live-streamed publicly at this link.
