Mediterranean urban forests and trees: an invaluable heritage to preserve and grow for the livelihood and well-being of present and future generations 

The Silva Mediterranea Working Group on UPF with different partners is pleased to announce the launch of the webinar series TreeCities4MED. The aim of this thematic webinar is to address relevant issues related to the planning, design and management of urban forests and trees in the Mediterranean region for improved resilience of urban communities to the effects of global changes.

The webinars will be held on a 2-3 months basis, starting in July 2020. Experts from the region and beyond will be invited to give presentations and contribute to the discussions in the different thematic sessions. Participation to the events will be open to all those interested in attending.

Webinar 6 - Urban forestry and urban greening in drylands: improving resilience, health, and wellbeing of urban communities

Description: The webinar will discuss challenges and opportunities for urban forestry implementation in drylands and launch the FAO publication Urban forestry and urban greening in drylands: improving resilience, health, and wellbeing of urban communities, developed by FAO in the framework of the Green Urban Oases (GUO) Programme. The programme was launched by FAO in 2021 to support dryland cities in Africa, Near East and Asia strengthen their policy and technical capacity to design and implement integrated urban forestry and urban greening strategies to address local challenges and sustainably increase the well-being and resilience of their urban communities. After the intervention of two international experts in the sectors of dryland forests and urban forestry, two of the cities involved in the GUO Programme will be invited to share key challenges of urban forestry in two Mediterranean dryland cities: Amman (Jordan) and Tunis (Tunisia).

Webinar 5 - The Tree City of the World Programme in the Mediterranean Region: experiences from Cesena (Italy), Kocevje (Slovenia), and Cieza (Spain) 

Date: Thursday 23 June, 12.00-13.30, Rome time (CEST)

Description: In 2019, FAO and Arbor Day Foundation launched the Tree Cities of the World (TCoW) programme, an international effort to recognize cities and towns committed to ensuring that urban forests and trees are properly maintained, sustainably managed, and duly celebrated. In 2022, 138 have been awarded TCoW, worldwide; 20 of these cities are located in the Mediterranean Region, including Cesena (Italy), Kocevje (Slovenia), and Cieza (Spain). Administrators from these three cities have been invited to participate in this webinar to present the urban forestry/urban greening activities they are implementing and the advantages of being part of the TCoW programme.

 

Webinar 4 - Mainstreaming Ecosystem Services and Biodiversity in peri-urban Forest Park Creation: experience from Eastern Europe

Keynote: Mr Adrian Răulea (Programme Director, Cluj Metropolitan Development Association)  

Description: Cluj Metropolitan Development Association and the City of Cluj-Napoca have recently finalized the project Management and Utilization of Urban Forests as Natural Heritage in Danube Cities (URBforDAN), funded by the European Union within the Danube Transnational Program. The specific objective of the project was to foster sustainable use of natural and cultural heritage and resources of the urban forests. URBforDAN was implemented in seven project partner cities: Ljubljana (SLO), Vienna (AT), Budapest (HUN), Zagreb (CRO), Cluj-Napoca (ROM), Belgrade (SRB), and Ivano-Frankivsk (UA). The webinar will open the XIV Workshop of the WG.

Webinar 3 - Integrated planning for a sustainable and resilient Turin

Date: Wednesday 30 June, 14:00-15.30, Rome time

Keynote: Mr Simone Mangili (Aide to the Mayor, Sustainability Policy and Strategic Planning Mayor’s Office, Municipality of Turin, Italy) 

Description: The City of Turin has recently adopted four major planning tools detailing strategies and actions for a sustainable and resilient future. The Strategic Green Infrastructure Plan lays out the strategies for the evolution, expansion and management of the city's green spaces. The Climate Resilience Plan examines the city's climate vulnerabilities and how the city will adapt to meet new challenges. The Sustainable Urban Forest Management Plan details the objectives and management practices to maximize the ecosystem services generated by the city's urban forest. Finally, the City has recently completed a comprehensive evaluation of 9 ecosystem services produced by the city's green spaces and developed a tool kit for maximizing them and engaging private partners in the process.
