ABSTRACT

The fourth edition of the programme for empowering women in the aquaculture sector in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, held in İzmir, Türkiye, from 18 to 22 January 2026, contributed to the implementation of the GFCM 2030 Strategy by strengthening human capacity and promoting gender equality in aquaculture. The training brought together ten young women professionals from across the Mediterranean and Black Sea region and delivered a practice‑oriented programme combining technical field visits, institutional exchanges, and networking activities covering key segments of the aquaculture value chain. Through direct engagement with private companies, research institutions, and sector stakeholders, participants gained practical insights into production systems, processing and value addition, quality control, traceability, and compliance with international standards. The initiative enhanced participants’ technical and managerial capacities, increased awareness of the role of innovation and research and development in sustainable aquaculture, and reinforced regional cooperation among women professionals. It further strengthened the network of women in aquaculture, supporting continued knowledge exchange, peer learning, and long‑term professional engagement, and contributing to inclusive and sustainable aquaculture development in the Mediterranean and Black Sea region.
