Regional Training “Digital Soil Organic Carbon Mapping: towards the development of national soil organic carbon stock maps” of the Central America, Caribbean and Mexico Soil Partnership

In order to support countries to develop national SOC maps, the GSP together with the Mexican National Institute for Forestry, Agriculture and Livestock Research (INIFAP) and the Mexican National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) is organizing a regional on-the-job training on Digital Soil Mapping. Participants from 15 countries (Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala,  Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Saint Lucia, Suriname, The Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago) attended  the training workshop.

 

The development and compilation of a Global Soil Organic Carbon map (GSOCMap)  was agreed during the 4th Session of the GSP Plenary Assembly held in May 2016 in Rome, as part of the 2016-2017 work plan for the Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils (ITPS) which will support the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) process in cooperation with and as requested by the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and its Science Policy Interface (SPI). The 25th Committee of Agriculture - COAG (FAO, Rome, 26-30 September 2016) and the 155th FAO Council (5-9 December 2016) further supported the assignment of the GSP with this task.

The GSOCmap will be developed using a distributed approach which will strongly rely on country inputs to build a global map from national soil organic carbon (SOC) maps produced under common specifications. To this end, countries are invited to develop national SOC maps according to predetermined specifications developed by FAO. This will also allow countries to develop nationally important products in order to report on SDG 15.3.1 on land degradation.

Focal points of the 20 countries of the region have appointed national specialists to participate in the training and commit to the finalization of the respective national maps. Topics of the training will include multivariate statistics, data base harmonization, interpolation and extrapolation of soil data, model development and validation for predicting SOC contents using environmental covariates. The working language of the training will be Spanish. At the end of the training, a plan will be established for each country according to their needs to follow up the finalization of the national SOC maps and the regional SOC map for Central America, the Caribbean and Mexico.
