New additions to CFRC library

20.10.2023

Nineteen new publications in English have been added into CFRC’s Library section. These publications cover a diverse array of topics related to contract farming (CF) and include journal articles, book chapters, working papers and conference proceeding papers. They were all published in 2023.

The publications encompass geographic regions spanning Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America. They explore CF practices in countries such as Algeria (Assassi & Soullier, 2023), Egypt (Tabe-Ojong & Abay, 2023), Ghana (Selorm et al., 2023; Dubbert et al., 2023), Zimbabwe (Mukucha & Chari, 2023), China (Dong & Liang, 2023; Fu et al., 2023; Wu et al., 2023), Indonesia (Snashall & Poulos, 2023; Haryono et al., 2023; Ni’mah & Irham, 2023; Toiba et al., 2023), Viet Nam (Hoang & Nguyen, 2023), Greece (Malindretos et al., 2023),  Italy (Weituschat et al., 2023), and Chile (Benitez‐Altuna et al., 2023).

For those interested in specific agrifood value chains, nine publications delve into CF for cashew in Ghana, chili, coffee, palm oil and rice in Indonesia, tomato in Algeria, vegetables in China and in Chile and in soybean in Ghana, sugar in Africa and wheat in Italy.

This collection covers important topics, such as the multifaceted impacts of CF. For example, Assassi and Soullier (2023) examine the impact of price‑subsidized contracts on farmers' income in Algeria. Other research explores the impact of CF on food insecurity (Das et al., 2023), productivity for soybean farmers in  Ghana (Selorm et al., 2023), the long-term economic development of smallholder palm farmers in Indonesia (Snashall & Poulos, 2023), and the adoption of sustainable farming practices in Chile, Italy and Ghana (Benitez‐Altuna et al., 2023; Weituschat et al., 2023; Dubbert et al., 2023) and quality certification (Dong & Liang, 2023).

Other research topics include farmers' perceptions of CF in the post-Covid era in Greece (Malindretos et al., 2023), chili farmers’ willingness to participate in CF in Indonesia (Ni’mah & Irham, 2023), determinants of small farmers’ participation in CF in Vietnam (Hoang & Nguyen, 2023; Toiba et al., 2023) and constraints influencing farmers' engagement in profitable value chains and CF in Egypt (Tabe-Ojong & Abay, 2023). Notably, Machio and Meemken (2023) examine women’s participation in CF, in particular in five African countries.

Furthermore, other papers focus on the design and management aspects of CF schemes, including Fu et al. (2023) on the dynamics of farmer-buyer relationships in China, Wu et al. (2023) on coordination mechanisms of CF in China and Haryono et al. (2023)  on the design of a CF scheme for coffee in Indonesia.
