Several issues are influencing the European fish market at the moment. Firstly, low groundfish supplies are leading to high prices. At the same time, inflation is at its highest level for several decades, and this has exerted upward pressure on fish prices in all major markets.

Inflation in France reached 5.2 percent in May 2022 year-on-year according to the French statistics institution (INSEE). According to the French statistics institution (INSEE), the consumer price index increased by 4.8 percent year-on-year in March 2022 (compared with 4.5 percent in March, 3.6 percent in February and 2.9 percent in January 2022). Increased energy costs are again the main contributor to inflation. Food inflation was at 3.8 percent, while fresh food inflation was at 6.6 percent.
