Only the main events organized in the country or for country partners are summarized in the table below. Monthly coordination meetings are organized with the National focal point and the team of coordinators of the three project outputs.

A team of 5 representative from the national multidisciplinary team of the water scarcity initiative participate in Regional project inception workshop hosted by Egypt.

A roadmap towards Water Sustainability in the NENA Region

The country team was selected and the sites for local assessments were identified.

A national water productivity focal point participated in a technical meeting on water productivity organized as part of the setting of the collaborative platform on water productivity of the WSI.

April

Tunis, Jendouba

A technical mission was carried out that initiated the implementation of the activities of the two joint regional projects (RNE-WEPS and TCP/RAB/36020) with a meeting of the Tunisian NMDT of the WSI acting as an advisory board, and with each of the three working groups with a multi stakeholder group in Jendouba.

Kairouan

Farmer Field Schools (FFS) on olive water productivity have been launched and specialized trainings were implemented along the crop season.

Jendouba

The first cycle of a water accounting assessment – rapid water accounting using existing data sets and expert knowledge has been implemented in two sites of the Bouhertma irrigation scheme. This assessment has been implemented by a team from the local CRDA and the Ministry of Agriculture.

Fourteen Tunisians from the MoA participated in a tailored long training for trainers on crop mapping using remote sensing and as part of the training, country teams collected data points in Jendouba site over two seasons, prepared a crop map using remote sensing, and presented the results to the government.

A team from the Ministry of Agriculture (the Minister with three of his directors) attend the Stockholm Water Week.

Kairouan

Four FFS’s have been implemented involving 25 farmers each over one crop season with one meeting a week around good agricultural practices for improved water productivity for olives.

A national coordination workshop was done between the different components of the project to review the progress and discuss the future plans gathering the three working teams composed of 45 participants.

Four Tunisian participants attended the Land and Water Days and its high level ministerial section organized by FAO and the LAS.

Two Tunisians from the MoA participated in a regional training for trainers on crop mapping using remote sensing, attending as master trainers. Training for facilitators on FFS methodology was implemented with 25 extension engineers participating from Kairouan governorate.

Two Tunisian representatives of the country water accounting team participated in a specialized regional training on Cordova ET fabrication and installation.

Two Tunisian representatives of the country water accounting teams participated in project sessions at Cairo Water Week and specifically a regional training on advanced water accounting-introduction for analysts.

Training for trainers for 10 Tunisians from the MoA team was implemented on the use of WaPOR database and tools by FAO and IHE Delft.

A preliminary baseline on crop water productivity for strategic crops from national literature was produced and presented at the Regional Water productivity Conference in Tunis, Tunisia.

Three Tunisian representatives of the ET network team participated in a regional training on establishing and operating a regional network for field measurement of actual crop water consumption (evapotranspiration) organised by ICARDA for the WSI.

Various events and trainings planned from March to April had to be postponed due to the CoVID-19 restrictions.

A technical backstopping mission was carried out on the Rapid Water Accounting and preparation of the advanced water accounting.

A presentation of the Jendouba Rapid Water Accounting was done in the RNE webinar series on water accounting in use by Mr. Alaeddine Jelassi from DGRE, MoA on behalf of the water accounting team.

A presentation of the project results was done to key country stakeholders via Zoom webinar. The session presented in particular the rapid water accounting, the farmers field schools and the ET monitoring done by the INGC as well as the plan for Nexus work in North Tunisia.

A scoping mission was carried out with the aim of starting a water productivity assessment for date production.
