The Kunming Biodiversity Fund approves funding for FAO projects in the Cook Islands, Madagascar, Mexico, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Türkiye, and Uganda

12/11/2025

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has helped seven countries secure $5.8 million in financing from the Kunming Biodiversity Fund to integrate biodiversity into agrifood systems and drive action under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF).

These FAO-led projects will support countries in scaling up the sustainable use of biodiversity to ensure effective implementation of the KMGBF, adopted by countries at the end of 2022.

The Kunming Biodiversity Fund is an important and innovative mechanism established by the Government of China in support of the implementation of the KMGBF. It provides targeted support to regions and countries with high biodiversity value that require capacity building and resources to implement global commitments.

Guided by its Strategy on Mainstreaming Biodiversity across Agricultural Sectors, FAO is helping countries implement and monitor their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans, including through platforms like the Agri-NBSAPs Support Initiative, launched by FAO at the COP16 of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

This includes supporting policy coherence, promoting best practices, and scaling up innovative agrifood solutions to accelerate progress toward global biodiversity goals.

The critical investments of the Kunming Biodiversity Fund will help countries achieve their national biodiversity targets related to agrifood systems, ensure food security, nutrition and livelihoods, and protect the ecosystems we all depend on.
