Livestock Emergency Guidelines and Standards (LEGS) Training

UN FAO with the Mercy Corps Mongolia to organize the Livestock Emergency Guidelines and Standards (LEGS) training to build capacity to support the saving of livestock based livelihoods of communities affected by natural disasters. The first 3-day LEGS training was held on 10-13 October in Ulaanbaatar with 27 representatives of Central and Provincial Emergency Management Authorities, Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry and regional coordinators of Mercy Corps Mongolia.

The participants studied about the LEGS four-stage approach to responding to livestock emergencies, identification of appropriate livelihood-based livestock interventions in emergency response, and design with implementation response interventions according to LEGS standards and guidelines. The training was conducted by LEGS trainers Ms.Jigjidpurev Sukhbaatar, Ms.Ulziimaa Nyamaa, and Tuya Chimidbaldir.

Ms. Jigjidpurev, noted that “humanitarian support for herder families requires not only considerations for family’s livestock as their main asset but also considerations for herder family livelihoods.”
