Highlight – School Meals Spotlight at the FAO Council

SEE THE VIDEO HERE

School meals are receiving unprecedented global attention. Governments, development partners, and philanthropic organizations are increasing investments, recognizing that well-designed school meal programmes can improve children’s health, learning, and overall well-being.

Yet, in many contexts, school meals still fall short nutritionally. Some serve a single food that may be high in energy but limited in essential nutrients. Others lack diversity, particularly nutrient-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, and legumes.

FAO shares a common vision with countries and partners: school meals are a game changer.
Every child deserves more than a meal. They deserve nourishment that fuels health, growth, learning and well-being.

During the Council, FAO highlighted this work through a short video showcasing how school meal programmes can shift from simple food provision to platforms that strengthen nutrition, learning and lifelong healthy eating skills.

A school meal–themed coffee break made these contrasts visible, highlighting the importance of nutritious, safe, delicious foods. The mock school setting illustrated what FAO and many countries are working towards: meals that support growth and that children genuinely enjoy and love.

FAO’s offer includes:
• Evidence-based guidance for nutritious, locally sourced meals, bolstered by food and nutrition education
• Data-driven strategies to reduce food waste
• Collaborative partnerships to maximize impact and scale

Healthy, tasty school meals for every child.
School meals can do more. FAO is here to help make it happen.
