Masterclasses on the Voluntary Carbon Market and its Climate Change Mitigation Potential

Evènement virtuel, 16/01/2024 - 09/04/2024

The Mediterranean Youth Task Force (MYTF) in collaboration with the Youth Skills Hub of the Education Track of the World Food Forum organized a series of masterclasses on the Voluntary Carbon Market and its Climate Change Mitigation Potential.

Overall, the masterclasses will enable participants to deepen their understanding and effective participation in the Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM). Each session will cover different topics, including greenhouse gas emissions, carbon registries, standards and methodologies, carbon credits, nature-based climate solution projects, and the Paris Agreement. The overall course aims to engage young participants in all sessions and support them to develop their own ideas or projects on a pre-declared topic.

The target audience of the masterclass includes youth, either students, activists, practitioners and researchers, seeking to develop their knowledge of VCM. It is addressed to participants who seek to deepen their understanding of how to work on VCM functions and how carbon credits are generated, monitored, verified, issued and retired after their use in climate action strategies in relation to the nature-based climate solutions. The course aims to provide young people with key knowledge and practical tools on VCM through each Masterclass.

Each Masterclass has a duration of 60 minutes. Throughout all sessions, participants will be able to learn the following six key working skills:

  • understanding of the Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM) and Compliance Market;
  • Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Accounting and Verification;
  • knowledge of Carbon credits quality and integrity;
  • familiarity with Carbon registries, standards, and methodologies;
  • application of VCM in nature-based Climate Solutions (NCS) and relation to the Paris Agreement; and
  • basics of nature-based Carbon project design.

The instructors of each Masterclass will range from MYTF members to renowned professors, International Organization practitioners and professionals from the private sector.

In order to receive a certificate of course completion, participants must attend at least five out of the first seven sessions and mandatorily attend session eight. Participants are also free to attend any session of their choice without receiving a certificate of course completion.
