In September 2020, the Director-General of FAO launched the FAO Green Cities Initiative. This initiative aims at building well-being of urban dwellers and resilient cities to shocks, by maximizing the provision of ecosystems goods and services; by fostering sustainable and climate-resilient practices and technologies to improve local food production and management of urban forests and trees; and by promoting sustainable and inclusive urban and peri-urban development, as well as green and circular economy. One of the objectives of the Green Cities Initiative is to support the creation of an adequate enabling environment that would help cities address crosscutting issues such as climate change adaptation, health, access to nutritious food and diets for all, employment, as well as equitable economic and social development. That is why FAO, in collaboration with the Politecnico di Milano and the African Center for Cities, has developed a participative training course on the integration of Urban and Peri-urban Agriculture, Urban and Peri-urban Forestry and Urban and Peri-urban Food system into Urban Planning focusing the Africa Region. Twelve African cities have been selected for this 6-month training course. This video shows the opening session of the training course that provides an overview of how these different elements, if properly integrated in the urban planning process, can help to build resilient and better African cities.
