This indicator focuses on accessions conserved ex situ in the country of the reporting Stakeholder that are safety duplicated.
It is based on information reported in response to question 6.2 of the Reporting Format for Monitoring the Implementation of the Second Global Plan of Action for PGRFA.
Question 6.2 requests the Stakeholder to provide the accessions conserved ex situ under medium- or long-term conditions at the end of the reporting period, including the holding institute WIEWS code, accession number, name of taxon, genebank(s) holding safety duplications and type of storage. Optionally, latitude and longitude of collecting site, collecting/acquisition source, type of storage and status under the Multilateral System of the International Treaty on PGRFA can also be indicated.
An accession is ‘safety duplicated’ when it is purposely stored at another genebank (whenever possible in a country on a different continent then where the holding genebank is located) under the same or better storage conditions then at the holding genebank and / or under a black-box arrangement.
About 18 000 national, regional and international institutes and organizations engaged in the conservation and sustainable use of PGRFA are registered by FAO and assigned a holding institute code, the ‘WIEWS INSTCODE’. The WIEWS INSTCODE is used worldwide in the exchange of information about germplasm conserved ex situ as unique identifier for the germplasm holding organization. A new WIEWS INSTCODE can be generated by contacting the National Focal Point or [email protected].
Note: Question 6.2 provides information for the Sustainable Development Goal indicator 2.5.1. Countries already publishing ex situ collections data that are compliant with the requirements of indicator 2.5.1 have the alternative option of communicating to FAO the Internet address for downloading the data.
Information from question 6.2 fulfills indicators 18, 19, 20 and 21 of the Second GPA.
The information is provided according to a table as described below.

The indicator is calculated as the percentage of accessions conserved ex situ that are safety duplicated at the end of the reporting period.
Show Data
National Focal Point rating for the country/region selected is displayed.
Accessions in the national genebank(s), total is the sum total of accessions held under medium or long-term conditions in the selected country/region reported by the Stakeholder at the end of the reporting period.
Accessions safety duplicated, percent is the percentage of accessions conserved ex situ under medium or long-term conditions in the selected country/region reported by the Stakeholder that are safety duplicated at the end of the reporting period.
Visualize Data
A map showing reporting countries is displayed using a colour gradient based on the percent of accessions conserved ex situ under medium or long-term conditions in the selected country/region reported by the Stakeholder that are safety duplicated at the end of the reporting period. Actual country data are depicted as a pop-up box when the mouse is placed over the country in the map.
A histogram of the percentages is displayed by CGRFA regions. Actual values are depicted as a pop-up box when the mouse is placed over the histogram bar.
