This indicator focuses on farmers’ varieties/landraces and underutilized species with potential for commercialization identified in the country of the reporting National Focal Point (NFP).
It is based on information reported in response to questions 11.3 and 11.4 of the Reporting Format for Monitoring the Implementation of the Second Global Plan of Action for PGRFA.
Question 11.3 requests the NFP to provide, for each relevant taxon or crop, the number of farmers’ varieties/landraces with potential for commercialization identified during the reporting period. Optionally, references can also be indicated.
The information is provided according to a table as described below.

Question 11.4 requests the NFP to provide the underutilized species with potential for commercialization identified during the reporting period. Optionally, they can also be ranked in terms of priority and detail the progress achieved so far toward their development and sustainable use in the country.
The term ‘underutilized species’ here refers to locally cultivated crops that have been neglected by research and are underutilized locally, nationally or even globally. Due to their adaptation to local production conditions, frequently in low-input agriculture, they might have a potential in terms of fitting into marginal production systems, possessing specific characteristics for their use as food plants or otherwise and thus provide market opportunities for smallholder farmers.
The term ‘commercialization of underutilized species’ refers to the marketing (nationally or even internationally) of the harvested product of these species or to other exploitation forms of the species that result in a financial return to the farmers.
The information is provided according to a table as described below.

The indicator is calculated as the sum total of farmers’ varieties/landraces and underutilized species with potential for commercialization identified in the country during the reporting period.
Show Data
National Focal Point rating for the country/region selected is displayed.
Farmers' varieties/landraces with marketing potential identified, total is the sum total of farmers’ varieties/landraces with potential for commercialization identified in the selected country/region reported by the NFP for the reporting period.
Farmers' varieties/landraces with marketing potential identified, annual average is the average per year of farmers’ varieties/landraces with potential for commercialization identified in the selected country/region reported by the NFP for the reporting period.
Underutilized species with marketing potential identified, total is the sum total of underutilized species with potential for commercialization identified in the selected country/region reported by the NFP for the reporting period.
Underutilized species with marketing potential identified, annual average is the average per year of underutilized species with potential for commercialization identified in the selected country/region reported by the NFP for the reporting period.
Visualize Data
A map showing reporting countries is displayed using a colour gradient based on the total number of farmers’ varieties/landraces and underutilized species with potential for commercialization in the selected country/region reported by the NFP for the reporting period. Actual country data aredepicted as a pop-up box when the mouse is placed over the country in the map.
A histogram of the total values and annual average values is displayed by CGRFA regions. Actual values are depicted as a pop-up box when the mouse is placed over the histogram bar.
