This indicator focuses on a public awareness programme promoting PGRFA conservation and utilization in the country of the reporting National Focal Point (NFP).
It is based on information reported in response to question 18.1 of the Reporting Format for Monitoring the Implementation of the Second Global Plan of Action for PGRFA.
Question 18.1 requests the NFP to provide if a public awareness programme promoting PGRFA conservation and utilization exists in the country and, if so, to indicate the stakeholder groups participating in its implementation. Optionally, programmes/projects/activities on PGRFA conservation and sustainable use that were initiated during the reporting period and were originated as a result of the public awareness programme can also be indicated.
Communicating effectively about the many benefits that PGRFA can bring is critical to the success of any conservation programme. A ‘public awareness programme’ on PGRFA is a set of activities which are geared towards the promotion of PGRFA conservation and sustainable use in the country, by addressing, for example, the importance of PGRFA for food security and nutrition, sustainable livelihoods and climate change.
