How SEAGA relates to The Special Programme on Food Security (SPFS)

SPFS

SPFS aims to reduce hunger rapidly and sustainably by increasing production and availability of food where it is most needed. One of the key principles of the SPFS is that particular attention to be paid to the essential roles of women in food crop production as farmers and agricultural workers. The SPFS also promotes participatory approaches to avoid the exclusion of disadvantaged social groups.

World Food Summit, Plan of Action Commitments

Objective 1.3 of the Plan of Action aims to ensure gender equality, and empowerment for women in the context of achieving sustainable food security for all.

More specifically, objectives 1.3 (f) and (g) are fully reflected in the SEAGA approach to development..

SEAGA

The SEAGA approach encourages these principles by supporting participatory planning on the basis of a realistic assessment of both gender roles and relations.

The SEAGA Programme also responds to the commitments made at the World Food Summit in November 1996. The key principles of the SEAGA Programme: gender roles are key; participation is essential; and disadvantaged people are a priority; are reflected throughout the World Food Summit Plan of Action.

The SEAGA Field Handbook aims to improve the collection, dissemination and use of gender-disaggregated data for rural development planning and focus research efforts on the division of labour and on income access

Objective 1.3 (c) of the Plan of Action, ensuring that institutions provide equal opportunities for and access to women, is being developed in the materials of the SEAGA intermediate handbook.

The SEAGA Programme is currently being pilot tested in a number of countries prior to full scale introduction and adaptation, in support of the aims of the SPFS.

The SEAGA team is ready to introduce the SEAGA materials, including training handbooks and multimedia elements to member countries at any level.
