Media advisory - AFC boost for FAO's Football Against Hunger Campaign

27/07/2011 Kuala Lumpur

(Asian Football Confederation / Food and Agriculture Organization) - The global fight against hunger will receive yet another boost when the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) provides over $400 000 to the Food and Agriculture Organization for TeleFood projects. The donation is part of the Asian football governing body’s contribution towards the campaign to fight hunger.

The cheque will be presented to Hiroyuki Konuma, FAO Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative for Asia and Pacific by AFC’s Zhang Jilong, AFC Acting President, at the AFC House, Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, on 29 July at 1140 hours on the sidelines of the AFC Executive Committee Meeting.

AFC joined hands with FAO in May 2010 with the purposeful intention of using football and football-related activities to help combat global hunger, which has reached the one billion threshold. The partnership is part of the Dream Asia Social Responsibility programme of AFC, which is keen to fulfill its obligation of helping less-privileged communities in Asia.

In line with AFC’s commitment, the 7 January 2011 opening match of AFC’s flagship tournament, AFC Asian Cup 2011™, was dedicated to the partnership with FAO and its campaign Asian Football Against Hunger  with initiatives aimed at encouraging the public to take part in the fight against hunger and poverty and to raise funds to finance anti-hunger projects in communities.
The ongoing campaign is gathering strength by the day and the funds raised will be used to finance TeleFood community projects, which are designed to provide immediate and sustainable agricultural or livelihoods solutions to poor families and communities throughout Asia.

Please note that there are no media/photo opportunities for this event. AFC will circulate a media release and photos via the AFC Media Channel.
