From 2012 to 2016, the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), with the support of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), worked with governments in four countries in Asia to help them develop pro-poor policies and approaches to better manage risks and vulnerabilities faced by smallholder farmers.   In Cambodia, FAO provided technical support to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries’ (MAFF) Department of Planning and Statistics (DPS) for researching and drafting three policy recommendations which focused on the vegetable sector, cattle production, and off-farm income generation activities. A cadre of 100 mid-level government officials, staff of policy institutes, farmer organisations and other civil society organisations, were trained in policy analysis, formulation and internalisation of policy recommendations. These recommendations are then incorporated in public policies to protect the vulnerable rural poor and smallholder farmers from risk.

The project instructed farmers in agricultural techniques to increase their harvest yields and standardised their products.  This allows the farmers and Coop to negotiate contracts with bigger companies.  The pilot project successfully strengthened the Cooperatives and provided farmers with links to a new market which has increased income and improved their lives.

Some 200 000 people from Mosul and across Iraq will be able to earn an income for the first time since 2014, thanks to a new FAO project that is restoring irrigation to 250 000 hectares of farmland.Water will soon be flowing again through the canals that used to feed the once-fertile land some 30 km west of Mosul – Iraq’s third largest city. Through the cash-for-work component of the project, FAO supports vulnerable families who need money for daily needs, including food and clothes, heating and transport. Many of them have not had paid employment for at least two years. Participants are clearing the main canal of the northern Al Jazeera irrigation scheme of dirt, stones and debris, which will allow it to again feed small canals throughout the farming landscape. FAO has also repaired the pumping station that feeds the canal system from Mosul Dam. And, for the first time, the agency is collaborating with a demining company to clear valuable farmland around the canals of undetonated ordinances, so farmers can plant crops and graze their livestock safely. The project is already benefiting more than 3 000 people and is essential in getting farming activities in the area back underway.

Thailand launches national Save Food Campaign in collaboration with FAO to reduce huge amounts of food loss and food waste. "Worldwide, food worth more than 32 trillion baht is lost during production, at harvest, during handling, transportation, distribution, and storage or is simply wasted and thrown away at the consumer level, and in the retail and food service sectors" said FAO Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative Hiroyuki Konuma. Building on the success of the celebration of International Day of Forests 2014, which featured lively forestry debates that took place on 21 March 2014, the FAO Regional Office for Asia Pacific (RAP) continued this tradition by organizing three debate contests targeting Bangkok-based high school and university students on 20 March 2015.  The debate was organized in collaboration with RECOFTC – The Center for People and Forests and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) under the theme of Forests and climate change.  The event was attended by 63 participants and resulted in a very informative and interesting discussion.
