The overall objective of the project “Improving Food Security and Market Linkages for Smallholders” called “MALIS” is to improve food security and nutrition for vulnerable smallholder farmers in the two provinces by improving farming systems, household income and family feeding practices.

In line with the National Committee for Disaster Management (NCDM) and its plans to develop an overall strategy for disaster risk reduction, including the agriculture sector, the General Directorate of Agriculture (GDA) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has requested a joint project with FAO to assist in planning and testing specific DRR measures that are tailored to the needs of agriculture. The GDA has selected Kampong Speu Province and the districts of Aoral, Baseth, Kong Pisei and Phnom Srouch as pilot sites for field activities. These districts are prone to both drought and floods. The project will distil key lessons and planning advice on proactive disaster risk reduction measures in agriculture for further replication in other provinces.

FAO aims to control the emergence of AI and limit the economic costs of the disease and the potential for its spread to humans through reinforcement of capacities at different levels. And has been focusing its efforts through the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Surveillance Programme.

In an effort to tackle these issues, the Regional Fisheries Livelihood Programme for South and Southeast Asia (RFLP) has worked to improve the livelihoods and strengthen the capacity of small-scale coastal fisheries communities and government agencies while contributing to the sustainable management of aquatic resources.
