This publication presents FAO’s work on climate change and fisheries and aquaculture. It includes examples of FAO’s support to countries so that they are better able to adapt to the impact of climate change in the fisheries and aquaculture sector. It also brings together FAO’s most up-to-date knowledge on climate change, including a portfolio of adaptation tools and measures used to support countries’ climate commitments and action plans.

Based on the gender activities carried out, the NAP-Ag programme has developed a training guide on mainstreaming gender to support countries in their adaptation planning processes. This guide provides a complete set of materials to be used in training workshops on mainstreaming gender in adaptation planning in the agriculture sector, and is a valuable resource to turn gender goals into concrete action.

The following five practical actions can be widely implemented for measurable and rapid impacts on livestock emissions: 1) boosting efficiency of livestock production and resource use; 2) Intensifying recycling efforts and minimizing losses for a circular bioeconomy; 3) capitalizing on nature-based solutions to ramp up carbon offsets; 4) striving for healthy, sustainable diets and accounting for protein alternatives; and 5) developing policy measures to drive change. This brief describes how these can be implemented in integrative and sustainable ways, taking account the diversity of livestock systems and enhancing synergies and managing tradeoffs with other sustainable development objectives.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) estimates that over 820 million people in the world today are chronically hungry. If temperatures continue to rise, then progress towards eradicating hunger and ensuring the sustainability of our natural-resource base to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development will be at risk. Without action, the changing climate will affect food availability and hinder access to food by disrupting the livelihoods of millions of rural people. 

Delivering on country commitments to transform food systems and promote sustainable agriculture can still create a world without hunger and malnutrition by 2030. But we must work urgently to transform agriculture through inclusive, multi-sectoral approaches that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and build resilience of people and the planet. This booklet illustrates FAO’s commitment to innovating in agriculture and transforming its practices to meet the climate challenge and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Given the imminent challenges climate change poses for poverty reduction and sustainable development, the need for coherent and integrated climate risk management approaches that address the underlying causes of vulnerability – and that simultaneously increase the ability of the rural poor to adapt to and cope with natural hazards - has never been more pressing.

Climate change is accelerating the frequency and intensity of extreme natural hazards and those living in rural areas are disproportionately affected. 

Life in high-risk geographical locations, heavy reliance on agriculture and natural resources, and limited coping capacity as a result of low income, lack of savings, weak social networks, low asset bases are all contributing factors. Protecting poor and vulnerable small-scale producers from the negative impacts of climate risks is necessary to effectively carry out FAO’s strategic objectives and achieve Sustainable Development Goals 1 (ending poverty) and 2 (zero hunger). As shown in this report, managing climate risks through social protection is a valid and effective investment to safeguard the livelihoods of small-scale producers and to strengthen their essential role in ensuring food security across the globe.
