Collaborative Partnership on Forests

Turning the tide

CPF and FAO Forestry contributes to 18th session of United Nations Forum on Forests

FAO Forestry will play a key role in contributing to the deliberations of the upcoming United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF18). The forum, from 8-12 May at UN headquarters in New York, will discuss the implementation of and progress on the UN Strategic Plan for Forests (UNSPF) 2017-2030.

This includes the contributions of Member States, the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF), which FAO chairs, regional and subregional organizations, as well as the contributions of major groups and other relevant stakeholders.

The Forum will also discuss the interlinkages between the Global Forest Goals and the UNSPF with the Sustainable Development Goals under review at the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in July 2023, the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, and other forest-related developments.

FAO will provide specific technical inputs on the preparations for the Global Forest Resources Assessment (FRA) 2025, updates on the implementation the UNSPF Communication and Outreach strategy, and the International Day of Forests, and a joint statement on behalf of the 16 members of the Collaborative Partnership on Forests, including the announcement of the theme for the International Day of Forests 2024.

FAO will also contribute to a panel discussion on forests, energy and livelihoods. More than 2 billion people rely on wood energy for their cooking and heating. linking forests, energy and livelihoods and mainstreaming this nexus in integrated policy approaches can help to achieve several SDGs and fight poverty and hunger as well as to contribute tackling the urgent environmental and economic challenges facing the world today.

At the side event “Towards a more efficient and impactful Collaborative Partnership on Forests” pathways to strengthen CPF’s support to UNFF Member States and the implementation of the UNSPF will be discussed. Follow the event through UN Web TV (11 May 2023, 1:15-2:30 pm EDT).

What is the UN Forum on Forests?

The UNFF has universal membership of all Member States of the United Nations and specialized agencies, with the main objective to promote “… the management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests and to strengthen long-term political commitment to this end…”.

It was established in 2000 by the Economic and Social Council of the UN (ECOSOC) based on the Rio Declaration, the Forest Principles, Chapter 11 of Agenda 21 and the outcome of the International Process on Forests and the International Forest Forum and other key milestones of international forest policy.
