Typhoon Haiyan sweeps the central Philippines, with up to 300 km winds. Farming and fishing communities were devastated. Striking between two planting seasons, the typhoon destroyed ready to harvest, harvested and newly planted crops. Farmers had few weeks to clear replant their fields.
The race for rice
FAO distributes rice seed packages to nearly 44 000 families in time for the planting season. The total anticipated production is enough to feed 800 000 people for 1 year. This assistance is saving livelihoods and money: a USD 5 million farming intervention producing an estimated USD 84 million in food.
Rice harvest ongoing
Farmers are bringing home their rice crop and will soon thereafter begin a new planting season.
