Objective:

To reduce vulnerability and risk to food security by building strong and resilient livelihoods among the most vulnerable rural households in the southern Africa region.

Key partners:

United Nations Regional Directors Team, Regional Food Security Cluster, Southern African Development Community (SADC), Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa and the Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Policy Analysis Network.

Beneficiaries reached:

Stakeholders and partners at the national and regional level, including the United Nations Regional Emergency Office of Southern Africa (RIACSO); National and Regional Vulnerable Assessment Committees (RVAC and NVACs); and the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research.

Activities implemented:
  • Provided technical support to SADC VACs to strengthen coordination, technical assessments and dissemination of information.
  • Assisted the RVAC IPC Technical Working Group (TWG) in capacity building, training, lessons learned and institutionalization of IPC.
  • Provided technical and coordination support to RIASCO to strengthen emergency preparedness and response in the region.
  • Supported regional and national early warning information and analysis systems.
  • Supported the Regional Food Security and Nutrition Working Group to strengthen programmes aimed at reducing the risk of disaster and vulnerability.
  • Provided technical support to SADC RVA to undertake food security disaster risk profiling.
  • Assisted the FAO Multi-disciplinary Team in developing and strengthening the regional FAO Vulnerability Risk Reduction Programme.
Impact:
  • Strengthened food security information and analysis in southern Africa.
  • Strengthened emergency preparedness and response across the region.
  • Improved early recovery and linkages between emergency and longer-term development initiatives.
