Provision of seed and essential agricultural inputs in Sri Lanka

Provision of seed and other essential agricultural inputs for livelihoods recovery in the north

To enhance the food security of conflict-affected families in the Northern province in order to rapidly initiate the resumption of livelihoods activities for returnee farming families.

Key partners:

The Department of Agriculture – Northern Provincial Council, Department of Animal Production and Health and the Pandarawanni Farmers Organization.

Beneficiaries reached:

8 218 households (approximately 32 872 individuals).

Activities implemented:
  •  Distributed 187 tonnes of paddy seed to 2 969 households and 29 tonnes of groundnut and cowpea to 3 399 households.
  •  Provided 500 water pumps and 1 000 sprayers at a subsidized rate.
  •  Provided home garden kits (in kind) consisting of an assortment of vegetable seeds to 3 600 households.
  •  Provided livestock assistance to 1 010 households, each of which received 20 one-month-old chicks, a 25 kg bag of starter mash and a 6 m roll of wire mesh to use for fence construction.
  •  The beneficiaries were able to cultivate 1 220 ha of paddy crop, 214.7 ha of groundnut crop and 157.3 ha of cowpea crop.
  •  Poultry provided by the project resulted in an average household production of 240 eggs per month, most of which is used for income generation (approximately LKR 4 332 per month).
