Objective:

To enhanced food consumption and household income through increased production of maize, wheat, rice and vegetables and reduced dependence on markets.

Key partners:

The Ministry of Food and Agriculture and other national and international non-government organizations.

Beneficiaries reached:

33 200 households (249 000 individuals).

Activities implemented:
  •  Provided 230 tonnes of maize seed, 14 000 sachets of vegetable seeds and 1 640 tonnes of fertilizer to 14 000 households for the Kharif 2010 season.
  •  Provided 960 tonnes of wheat seed, 19 200 sachets of vegetable seeds and 1 920 tonnes of fertilizer to 19 200 households for the Rabi 2010 season.
  •  Provided training in best farming practices to over 75 percent of households that received inputs.
Impact:
  •  The seeds distributed under the project produced approximately 5 600 tonnes of maize (valued at USD 1.65 million) and approximately 19 860 tonnes of wheat (valued at USD 7 million).
  •  The agricultural inputs provided by FAO resulted in economic gain and increased access to vegetables for the vulnerable households.
