Objective:

To contribute to the improvement of humanitarian actions in the agriculture and food security sectors through providing appropriate assistance to flood-affected households, generating and sharing relevant information as well as strengthening response coordination.

Key partners:

Office National de Développement Rural and international and local Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs), such as Intersos and Première Urgence.

Beneficiaries reached:

6 550 flood-affected households and humanitarian actors (United Nations agencies, NGOs, Government bodies and donors).

Activities implemented:
  • Distributed 15 tonnes of millet, 15 tonnes of sorghum and 5.5 tonnes of maize to targeted beneficiary households.
  • Supported food security information and coordination of humanitarian actors through assessments and surveys on the country’s 2010/2011 agricultural campaign and contributing to the 2011 contingency plan for soaring food prices in Chad.
  • Provided technical planning and support to implementing partners in food security by sharing information on improved seed needs, availability and access as well as establishing three new ERCU offices.
  • Facilitated meetings and assessment missions to ensure coordination between actors and the Government, providing complementary information on food security when needed.
Impact:
  • Increased agricultural production of flood-affected beneficiary households.
  • Improved food security information, technical assistance and planning to the Government and participating humanitarian actors.
  • Strengthened the link between the Government’s coordination structures and those of humanitarian actors.
  • Strengthened FAO’s capacity in its role as Food Security Cluster coordinator.
