Objective:

To restore livelihoods of vulnerable families affected by drought and ensure production of basic grains for the next productive cycle.

Key partners:

Ministry of Agriculture, municipal governments, the NGO Progetto Mondo Mlal and other humanitarian agencies.

Beneficiaries reached:

3 318 households.

Activities implemented:
  • Agricultural components: distribution of 200 bushels of seed beans ICTA (registered and produced locally), fertilizers, 78 metal silos, protective gear and bags for packing bean seed.
  • Livestock components: distribution of 5 600 chickens, 2 800 rabbits and materials for vermicomposting.
  • Training of beneficiaries on artisanal cultivation of bean seed and bean crop, use of rabbit meat products and subproducts, as well as on livestock and veterinary issues pertaining to poultry and rabbits.
Impact:
  • Cultivation of 193 ha of bean seed with a total production estimated at nearly 200 tons.
  • Improved technical skills in bean seed production have contributed to the strengthening of the rural economy.
  • Increased availability of basic grains for consumption and reduced level of food insecurity of beneficiaries.
  • Improved dietary diversification in vulnerable families through consumption of poultry and rabbits.
