Objective:

To strengthen food security and diversify the livelihoods of returnees and their host communities.

Key partners:

Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, non-governmental organizations, Community Development Committees and field partners.

Beneficiaries reached:

63 570 households.

Activities implemented:
  • Organization of training workshops on the analysis and dissemination of food security information in Burundi.
  • Organization of workshops on nutrition, production techniques and seed conservation, diseases identification, etc.
  • Distribution of 775 kg of vegetable seeds, 66 000 fruit trees, 30 000 banana plantlets, 3 600 goats and veterinary equipments.
  • Cultivation of 2 340 ha including 500 ha of rice, 750 ha of maize, 200 ha of peanuts, 100 ha of sweet potato, 600 ha of cassava and 190 ha of banana.
  • Rehabilitation of four marshes for a total of 218 ha.
Impact:
  • Improved and diversified diet.
  • Injected USD 179 620 into the local economy.
  • Improved access to good quality seeds and planting material.
  • Improved allocation of resources through the use of the information systems on food security in Burundi.
  • Revived the small livestock sector, generating an additional revenue source and organic manure.
  • Enhanced the capacity of 1 570 farmers, including 637 women, to manage properly community warehouses, to conserve and multiply seeds, etc.
  • Strengthened social ties thanks to community livestock partnership.
